At the end of 2012 BDO Recruitment conducted a survey on the current job market, focusing on the Mid-West. We approached key hiring managers in the locality to ask them about positions they had filled over the course of the year.
Interestingly, 78% of respondents had hired in 2012. However, most clients noted that they were hiring staff on a temporary or short-term basis. This could be indicative that companies are uncertain about what the future holds. Alternatively, businesses may simply want to ensure that they are making informed hiring decisions, thus, opting to trial new staff members to ensure that they will be valuable additions to the team.
There has been some anecdotal evidence that referrals had become a key aid in sourcing new staff. Some companies had in fact been providing bonuses or incentives to current employees who referred new hires. Our survey seems to confirm that this is the case. When it comes to sourcing staff without the aid of recruitment agencies, 52% of our clients claimed that employee referrals were there preferred means of recruiting new staff members.
While, according to our survey, most of our clients new hires in 2012 (32%) were within accounting and finance, there were additional vacancies that were proving difficult to fill. Interestingly, respondents noted difficulties when it came to filling Sales & Marketing vacancies. I.T was also noted as a challenging area for recruitment and respondents found roles which had requirements for languages, particularly German and Spanish difficult to fill.
Overall, the survey findings would be broadly in line with BDO Recruitment’s assessment of the local job market last year. In terms of the coming calendar year, BDO Recruitment has had a busy start to 2013 and we are hopeful that there will be significant signs of improvement in the local jobs market in the year ahead. We will be conducting further research over the coming months and will keep you posted on the findings.
