Court’s Service Annual Report Highlights Need for Good Corporate Governance

The annual report of the Court’s Service has warned businesses that “doing the right thing” is more important than looking after shareholder’s needs.

Speaking at the launch of the report yesterday Chief Justice Susan Denham said, “Knowing what is the right thing to do in a situation and then doing it, comes from exercising self-awareness, personal integrity and often no small amount of courage.”

Managing Partner of BDO Limerick, Denis Herlihy says, “In today’s increasingly regulated environment, directors and other persons responsible for corporate governance have significant legal responsibilities. The comments from Chief Justice Denham are timely and warranted. Governance issues range from board structure to internal control procedures, the need to safeguard assets, risk management, constitution of audit committees, and the implications of “shadow” directors.”
